HIV-1 gp41

HIV-1 gp41 is a transmembrane glycoprotein that forms part of the viral envelope glycoprotein complex. It is generated through the cleavage of the precursor envelope glycoprotein gp160, together with the external glycoprotein gp120. While gp120 is primarily responsible for binding to host-cell receptors, gp41 plays a critical role in mediating the fusion of the viral envelope with the host-cell membrane, thereby facilitating viral entry.
As a relatively conserved component of the HIV-1 envelope, gp41 contains several important antigenic regions and is recognized by antibodies generated during HIV-1 infection. Antibodies targeting gp41 are valuable research tools for studying HIV-1 envelope structure, viral entry mechanisms, antigenicity, and host–virus interactions.
